LAMENESS

How to tell if your horse has a lame?

Examine the feet of the horse -

Pick up each of your horse's hooves and check for stones caught up in the gaps. Look for any cracks or dark spots that could indicate an injury or bruising.

Examine the lower legs -

Check your horse's lower legs for signs of swelling, as well as any obvious cuts or wounds. Gently move the joints of your horse and examine their range of motion to determine if your horse is in pain.

Check for any limping-

Carefully watch your horse walk in a straight line on a hard flat surface. If it isn't obvious, observing the horse in motion and at rest is the best option to tell if your horse is suffering from a lame.

Clean your horse's hooves -

using a hoof pick

Keep them stabled -

sometimes the cause of your horse's lameness is unclear. If this is the case, keep them stable until they can be examined by your veterinarian.

Don't ride your horse -

Adding more weight to an injured horse is dangerous for the horse and the rider, so don't ride your horse until your vet says it's safe to.
