Post-race “bleeding” (exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage, or EIPH), affects the vast majority of Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. In addition, EIPH frequently occurs in hunter-jumpers and other horses performing intense exercise in events, steeplechases, and polo. It is commonly believed by jockeys, drivers, trainers, and owners that EIPH has a substantial negative affect on race performance.

“Bleeding” is believed to be caused by leakage of blood from pulmonary capillaries when pulmonary arterial pressure increases to high levels due to intense exercise.
