Equine Health: Proper Dosing of all Nitric Oxide Products
In order to get the most out of your nitric oxide delivering products, please use the following recommendations.
These instructions must be carefully followed or the product will not work.
SUMMARY:
- Feed on an empty stomach, no food one hour before or one hour after
- Dont have the time to wait one hour before and after dosing?
- You can dose anytime, however you will need to use two-and-a-half doses at a time for it to work with food in the stomach.
- This may be more expensive but it can save you time when needed
- No other drugs or medications during that 2 hour period
- No NSAID's (anti-inflammatories) or sedatives within 6 hours
These products are amino acid compounds; they go after proteins, so as empty a stomach as possible is very important. Feed in the stomach upsets the synergy of the ingredients, rendering it weak. With no food in the stomach, there will be an insulin reaction in the small intestine, delivering the full dosage of the active ingredients immediately into the bloodstream. Allowing the horse even small treats or to nibble on the ground is only wasting the product.
When you insure the stomach is empty for an hour before and an hour after dosing, the results are truly dramatic.
Different ways of obtaining as empty a stomach as possible are:
- Make certain the horse has cleaned up all his feed one hour prior to dosing and withhold feed for one hour following dosage
- Move the horse (only if this will not cause more harm to the horse as it would in the case of severe acute laminitis) to an empty stall with a clean floor for the 2 hour fasting period
- Use a comfortable muzzle that will not allow eating
- Safely tie the horse, so he can not eat. (Do not tie and force to stand any horse suffering from laminitis or in severe pain.)
- If this horse is being worked, use your workout time as part of the 2 hour fasting period and dose after the first hour
- Putting the horse out in a round pen, can be an easy way for the horse to play, and also get his dosing and fasting done.
Note: It is not necessary to withhold water, just make sure it is clean and fresh with no additives.
Dosing is easy: Use a 60cc oral dosing syringe or a 60cc syringe with the tip made larger. Take the syringe apart, add 3cc powder per 100 lbs. body weight (example: 30cc powder for a 1,000 lb horse). The scoop included is approximately one 30cc dose. Measurements in cc are on the syringe. Add water to the powder in the syringe and stir with a butter knife until the mix becomes a slurry. Carefully put the syringe back together and slowly squirt the slurry into the corner of the horses mouth, onto his tongue, allowing him to swallow. If he is reluctant to swallow, gently tickle his tongue with the syringe to make him work his tongue and swallow. Most horses like the taste, and some will lick the dose right out of a clean bucket. If the horse is critically ill or injured and double dosing initially is recommended, simply double the amount of powder to 6cc per 100 Lbs. body weight, (60cc powder for 1,000 lb. horse.) Some horses, particularly minis, donkeys, and some ponies require double dosing due to their metabolism.
Dosing according to the instructions on the label are: 3cc per 100 lbs body weight AM and PM for the first 14 days, then follow with only 1 dose per day. These instructions are for the average horse. Each horses individual needs may vary, and therefore it is imperative that each horse is treated specific to their needs.
In some instances, with critically ill, injured or laminitic horses, it is crucial to get the horses nitric oxide depleted system boosted quickly. The product will last in the system 1 1/2 to 3 hours each time you dose. It is important to understand that if the horse is in very serious condition that dosing as often as every 4-6 hours is very helpful for the horse. Once the horse is showing the desired response, it is important to maintain the dosages given for several days, then try and back down gradually. If by giving smaller doses, or less often is tolerated well by the horse, do so gradually. If backing down causes the horse to worsen, simply increase back to your original program until the horse is more stable. Most horses after initial aggressive dosing, as they recover will get to the point of only needing 1 dose per day, some every other day or even less.
Do not pre-mix this product for later dosing. Dose immediately after mixing or it will lose it's potency. Make sure the bottle is stored in a cool dry place with the cap on securely.
To get the most use out of your syringe, dip the black rubber stopper in mineral or vegetable oil after each use. This will also make the syringe slide more easily and dosing will be smoother.
The slurry can be a little sloppy, and will stain clothing, so wear something you don't mind getting dirty.
** Horses taking these products must not be on any type of anti-inflammatory. No NSAIDs, no Bute, Banamine, Ketoprophen, aspirin, Glucosamine, chondroitan sulfate, MSM, devils claw, yucca, and corticosteroids, to name a few. These and many other substances and herbs block nitric oxide formation and will not allow the nitric oxide delivering products to work. If you have any questions about a particular substance, please call or email us.
**VERY IMPORTANT: Nitric oxide delivering products INCREASE blood flow, and reduce blood pressure. Be very careful when giving any drugs or medications (except antibiotics, which are fine) with these products on board. Because of the increase in bloodflow and vaso dilating effects, drugs such as sedatives like acepromazine, xylazine, Dormosedan, any anesthetics, or narcotics, even isoxsuprine will be greatly intensified with the use of nitric oxide delivering products. Do not give these or any anesthetics in conjunction with nitric oxide delivering products. If you must give a sedative, narcotic or anesthetic wait at least 6 hours after dosing with a nitric oxide delivering product. If you have the vet scheduled for a procedure that will require sedation, inform your vet that the horse is taking nitric oxide delivering products. Wait at least 6 hours following the procedure to begin dosing again.
