Immune System
Nitric Oxide plays a crucial role in the immune system and is utilized as an effector molecule by macrophages to kill fungi, viruses, bacteria, protozoa, helminths, and rickettsiae. If an animal's ability to produce Nitric Oxide is reduced, it impairs the animals’ ability to fight infection. Increased exposure to pathogens increases an animal's need to produce Nitric Oxide.
